Today on the way to language class, I was reminded of the power of the one true God.
I left early enough to make the 30 minute walk (instead of being late enough to need a taxi like happens a lot of times). As I walked along I first saw a man lighting incense and praying to a small Ganesh idol in his shop - starting his day in a way he hoped would bring more business.
Then I passed another man who had removed 2 padlocks to gain access beyond a gated building to his small idols. They were old and disfigured to the point I couldn't recognize them. He rang bells and offered small bits of food and incense to his idols.
Further on, a woman had passed beyond a locked gate, opening another padlock into a small gated shrine where another Ganesh idol sat. She carried out various ministrations to appease, feed, and pacify this idol.
Right as I approached my school, there is another large temple complex, complete with locks and gates and a high fence around it.
I prayed for all the people I saw worshipping their idols - and as I did, the Lord (the one true Lord) brought a thought to my mind: I began to praise the Lord that I worshipped the one true God that did not need human help to protect himself.
I thought of the ark of the Lord being brought into the temple of Dagon in 1 Samuel 1:1-7. When brought before the false god Dagon, the Lord defended HIMSELF and his OWN honor by collapsing the false God to the ground. And when the people thought to restore Dagon to his prior position, the next day his head and hands were removed from his body as he lay on the ground before the ark of the One True God.
Isn't it amazing to know we worship a God who does not need us to protect him? He created this world and everything in it is His. It is amazing to have a God who can take care of Himself.
