language perspective

I saw this photo proudly displayed the other day... I think it was on a fellow believers facebook page... Perhaps our family has a little different perspective on this  - now that we have the privilege of learning a foreign language - full-time... It is hard work - and that is for people who are learning language as a full-time job (not having to support ourselves with another job)

This statement parades itself as patriotic - but at its heart there is only hatred and closed mindedness.

Perhaps you shouldn't learn a foreign language to accommodate illegals.  Perhaps you should learn a foreign language so you can share the Gospel with them.  God has brought the world to your doorstep - what advantage are you taking to spread the name of Jesus among the least of these in your community (even the stranger and alien?)

Perhaps you shouldn't learn a foreign language to accommodate illegals.  Perhaps you should learn a foreign language so that you can be a good neighbor. So that when someone around you (even a hated, loathed type of person) has a need, you can meet them on their terms, not yours - so that their need can be met for the glory of God.

I understand the arguments many Americans have about illegals, I really do.  But the fact is this:  If we have a right perspective as Christians (And we should view ourselves as Christians first, not Americans... there is a difference between ideas that are good for us as Americans and ideas that are good for us as Christians) we will see ourselves as the aliens and strangers that we are in this land and see God's purposes for us first and foremost.

I probably could write all of this better and in more detail - but let us suffice it to say: Many times the words that we speak as proud citizens - or proud individuals regarding other matters - can be perceived as less than loving.  Even as we work towards strengthening our borders and closing loopholes in business hiring of illegals (all power to you if you feel this is something you feel strongly about) let us ensure the love of Christ shines through what we believe is our rightness.
