Highest Aim

My church shared this quote several weeks ago:

"If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever"
- Thomas Aquinas

This quote by a church father may be the most familiar thing under the sun to you, but it is a new quote to me. These words gave me pause to think about a lot - especially considering our family is living overseas. Decidedly out of 'port'.

It served to give us a reminder of what is our highest aim?  Does our activity on a daily basis reflect that aim? Because if our aim is not sufficient...it would be better and easier for us to simply stay in port.

The same day, we observed the Lord's Supper, and this was an excellent reminder of the aim for our lives. The highest aim for our Lord was not to preserve his ship, his life... it was to give his life for the highest aim of all... the salvation of all humanity. As we look at how our lives are supposed to reflect the Lord... surely it is time to get out of port... that doesn't mean we should all 'leave the country'.... but it definitely means we should adjust to living for a higher aim.
